Great Fanfare At UUM Press Book Launch In Japan
UUM ONLINE: Tokyo, Japan, 23 September – The launching ceremony of the books published by UUM Press was held with great fanfare at the Tokyo International Book Fair 2016 recently.
The launching ceremony of the Japanese version of the two Islamic Finance books written by lecturers from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) has been made possible through the joint collaborative efforts between UUM Press, the Japan-Malaysia Association (JMA) and the Malaysian Institute of Translation & Books (ITBM).
This is the second time the academic works published by UUM Press have been translated into Japanese. Last year, 'The Politics of Bangsa Malaysia' paved the way for the internationalisation efforts to promote Malaysia and UUM at the world stage.
The book launching ceremony was officiated by His Excellency, Dato' Ahmad Izlan Idris, the Malaysian Ambassador to Japan.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Dato’ Ahmad Izlan stated that UUM is the authority in Islamic Banking since the university boasts two prominent schools; the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) and the Islamic Business School (IBS). Thus, the university should be the driving force to promote this subject matter at the international level especially through the publication of academic works.
The demand for Islamic finance is getting bigger and Japan is one of the top financial hubs that have started to make inroads into Islamic Finance. The Islamic Finance Industry has grown rapidly since it was first introduced in the 70’s and the recorded assets have reached a total of $1 trillion US dollars (US) in 2010. Currently, there are more than 300 Islamic financial institutions in 75 countries around the world.
According to the Asian Banker Research Group, the top 100 largest Islamic bank in the world has recorded an annual asset growth rate of 26.7% and the global Islamic finance industry has recorded an average growth of 15-20% per year.
"The publication of these books in Japanese was positively timely. Last year, “The Politics of Bangsa Malaysia” was translated to Japanese and it was sold at Kinokuniya - one of the largest bookstore chains in Japan. I was made to understand that this book is well-received by the Japanese. I also hope that these two books will also be accepted by the Japanese".
The book launching ceremony was held at Tokyo Big Sight in conjunction with the 23rd Tokyo International Book Fair (TBIF).
The ceremony was enlivened with the presence of Mr. Masashi Takai, the Chairman and CEO of Kinokuniya Company Limited, Mr. Keijiro Mori, the Executive Director of Import and Distribution of Books for Kinokuniya Company Limited, Mr. Takakazu Ogawa, the Director General of Japan-Malaysia Association, the Director of UUM Press, Assoc. Prof. Dr Ram Al Jaffri Saad, the authors (Dr. Zaemah Zainuddin and Ms. Shariza Osman) and guests.
