THE LAUNCH OF CIMB-UUM CHAIR INTENSIFIES RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN BANKING AND FINANCE
UUM ONLINE: Putrajaya - The launch of the CIMB-UUM Chair will spearhead the research activities in Banking and Finance and thus contribute to the Public-Private Research Network of the National Higher Education Blueprint.
The launching ceremony of the CIMB-UUM Banking and Finance Chair was presided over by the Minister of Higher Education, Yang Berbahagia Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh along with the CIMB Group Chief Executive Officer, Yang Mulia Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.
In his speech, Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh said, the collaboration between UUM and CIMB will serve as a platform for both institutions to initiate synergies in academic collaborative activities that not only bodes well for both parties, but more importantly for the development of the education in the banking and finance areas in the country.
The establishment of the CIMB-UUM Banking and Finance Chair has certainly strengthen UUM position as the center of excellence in education and research in Banking and Finance. He added that, the banking and finance industry is fundamental to the economy, however, the industry has been significantly affected by the scores of issues and challenges in today's economy,” he added.
"Therefore, without a doubt, the major players in Banking and Finance have to deal with the so-called 'new normal', and this requires significant adjustments to their strategies. For that reason, this is a fitting time to establish the CIMB-UUM Banking and Finance Chair,” he said during the launching ceremony held at Pullman Putrajaya Hotel, yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said, the CIMB-UUM Banking and Finance Chair (formerly known as BBMB Chair) was established in UUM on 30 January 1997 by Bank Bumiputra Malaysia Bhd with the aim to promote excellence in collaborative research and publication activities at the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB).
"This ceremony was held to commemorate another phase of the CIMB-UUM Chair by signing a new endowment letter and the appointment of a new CIMB-UUM Chair Professor”.
Meanwhile, Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Aziz said, the collaboration is part of an education initiative by CIMB. It provides an opportunity for CIMB to contribute towards enhancing the research capabilities of the Institutions of Higher Education in Malaysia.
"The cooperation between CIMB-UUM also complements our corporate social responsibility efforts towards developing the community through education which will certainly provide positive spillover effects on the quality of the graduates. In return, CIMB will have access to quality researches and a larger pool of graduates," he said.
Prof. Emeritus Dr. Salim Rashid has been appointed as the CIMB-UUM Chair Professor. He holds a PhD in Economics from Yale University in 1976 and has held various academic positions such as a Professor in the Department of Economics, University of Illinois. Prof. Dr. Salim Rashid main research areas focused on the finance, banking and economic development; religion and economics, particularly in the South Asia and East Asia.
He also served as national consultant to the Planning Commission of Bangladesh, besides being a consultant for international organisations such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
Also present at the ceremony were the Chairman of the University Board of Directors, Tan Sri Samsudin Osman; Deputy Director-General, Ministry of Higher Education, Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir; Deputy Chief Secretary (Administration) Ministry of Higher Education, Mr. Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad; Dean of SEFB, Prof. Dr Yusnidah Ibrahim and senior university officials.
