ECoFI DISCUSSES THE DEVELOPMENT AND CHALLENGES OF COMMODITY GROWTH

UUM ONLINE: The 5th Annual ECoFI Symposium - 2018 (AES2018) aptly themed, Commodity-Led Growth: Recent Developments and Challenges examines developments and challenges in commodity markets in Malaysia and overseas.
The seminar, attended by 80 participants, was officiated by the Dean of the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Aznor Ahmad.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Aznor said it is important to understand the latest developments and challenges in the major commodity markets and analyze the factors that influence a country to achieve sustainable economic development.
"Openness to trade and investment has played an important role in the creation of jobs and income growth, with about 40 percent of jobs in Malaysia is linked to export activity," she explained.
According to her, besides electrical and electronic products, commodity products are also the largest contributors to export earnings where five major commodity exports in Malaysia are petroleum, palm oil, crude petroleum, aluminium and coconut oil.
She also thanked the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) as the co-organizer of AES2018.
"I congratulate and thank the committee for organizing this symposium, hopefully this annual conference will be a platform for academicians, researchers, professionals, policy makers and industries to interact, exchange ideas and collaborate, especially in the areas of economy, finance and banking," she added.
The seminar lined up Nik Mohd Aznizan Nik Ibrahim who represented the Director-General of Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Datuk Dr. Ahmad Kushairi Din and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shri Dewi Applanaidu as Head of Research Unit - Sustainable Agriculture who delivered the keynote address.
A total of 39 papers were presented in eight parallel sessions.
