13 March 2018, School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) organized a Seminar entitled Energy-Stock Market Integration at the CAS Seminar Hall, UUM, featuring CIMB-UUM Chair Professor, Dr. Jonathan Batten as its distinguished speaker.
The seminar aimed questions raised by former US Federal Reserve Chairman, Mr. Ben Bernanke on the relationship between share and energy prices, which has been gaining the attention of many economists around the world.
This seminar also addressed some of the key issues such as whether shares and energy assets were integrated, could the share-price relationship be used to hedge or risk one’s assets against another in his research. Several key questions were addressed: Are stocks and energy assets integrated, and if so, what does this mean for portfolio management. Then, can the energy-stock price relationship be utilized to hedge, or offset, the risk of one asset against the other? And finally, what are the economic or financial characteristics of the integration and no integration states?
This seminar was attended by about 250 students, UUM members of staff and managers of the CIMB northern region branches. Also present was the Dean of SEFB, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Aznor Hj Ahmad.
