Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) clinched 12 gold medals at the Innovative Research, Invention and Application (I-RIA) 2019

UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) clinched 12 gold medals at the Innovative Research, Invention and Application (I-RIA) 2019 Exhibition held at the Mu’adzam Shah Hall recently. In addition to winning the gold medals, UUM also received 17 silver medals and 32 bronze medals through various research and university innovation projects. I-RIA 2019 received in total 228 entries from universities / polytechnics / colleges (167), primary and secondary schools (56), private agencies / companies (3) from all over Malaysia and two from abroad (Indonesia). From the total of 228 entries, UUM sent 75 projects to be contested during the two-day exhibition. 

Gold medallist, Dr. Muhammad Muhaizam Musa from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) said that the success has given him the aspiration bring the innovation to higher level by competing in international competitions by 2020. According to him, he used Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Onenote to conduct lectures in his classroom for this semester and used student activity in both applications including Flipgrid to listen to the students’ reflection on how they learned. He won the gold medal for the project called, 21st Century Learning - My Student Collaborate and Reflect project.

The gold medallist for the Institution of Higher Education (IPT) category was awarded to the Pasir Mas Vocational College led by Zainuri Mat @ Muhammad for the innovative product called the IP Calculator Ver 2.0. "This app saves time when calculating IP Address, fixes errors, simplifies the process of identifying the right Network ID and has the ability to check the status of connectivity and authenticity of IP," he said. The development of the project involved fellow lecturers namely Mdm. Asniza Musa and Mdm. Nor Azliza Shariff as well as with students namely Mr. Muhammad Faizi Fauzi and Mr. Muhamad Firdaus Faisal.

The closing ceremony of I-RIA 2019 was officiated by the Director of the Student Affairs Department, Dr. Massudi Mahmuddin. He later accompanied the UUM CAS Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Huda Ibrahim who presented prizes to the respective winners. Also presented were the Special Awards namely the ICC Young Innovation Award, the DVC (R&I) Special Award, the MyRIS Special Innovation Award, the Digicert POS Industry Award, the commercedotcom Special Award and the Productive Institution Award.
